Suffering from Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia?

New Device & Skills to Enhance your Experience

I am always excited when I expand my personal comfort zone by learning new ways to help my clients and this is definitely one of the best and easiest tools I have added but with almighty power.
Confidence is often a big issue with my clients and many suffer from anxiety and depression which contributes to them overeating. Along with my other therapeutic tools I have qualified to be an Alpa-Stim® practitioner. Often used to enhance the trance experience it works by ‘retuning’ the brain waves. I saw this when I had some electrodes attached to me and saw the pattern of brain waves change during my treatment. Featured in many press articles the small device has full FDA approval in the US for anxiety, depression and insomnia.  Check out www.themicrocurrentsite.co.uk for all the science and research.
It is one of the easiest devices to use with simple settings and 2 ear clips. I have used it working, gardening and just walking around tucked in a pocket. The best sleep ever has resulted and I feel really relaxed after the treatment yet alert.

If you suffer from anxiety, depression or insomnia you do not need me to tell you how debilitating it can be.

Start Moving Differently and Lose 500 Calories from Your Fat Stores

Did you see the Horizon programme last week about exercise? If you didn’t I urge to do so before it goes off the iplayer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01cywtq/Horizon_20112012_The_Truth_About_Exercise/

Dr. James Levine talked about NEAT- Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. If you can increase your NEAT you could burn 500 or more calories a day extra. Simple things that involve no gyms, no sweating and no cost either. Now I’m a big fan of this and have been encouraging clients for years to ‘just do it’ as the slogan goes!
Sitting down all day puts the whole body system into idle mode and when you make an effort to move around at least once per hour you will increase your metabolism and have a positive impact on your physiology.
Keep on the move by walking everywhere you can. Walk up escalators and stairs instead of lifts. Walk to the shops.
Stand up to have a meeting or walk with your colleagues. Set a reminder on your computer every hour to march up and down under desk for 1 minute or better still get up and do so.
Not only will you feel more awake you will be burning excess fat. If you are one of the 80% who take no regular exercise then use simple methods to get moving.

Slim People Enjoy Food Too! Have a mince pie!

Slim People Enjoy Food Too!

Why do fat people think slim people don’t enjoy food? Someone said to me today “well of course I really enjoy eating”. What’s that supposed to mean, that I don’t? Being in the food trade for years developing new products I learnt to appreciate ‘quality’ food. Slim people love eating too but they know when to stop because they ‘listen’ and ‘feel’ their body. Being bloated and feeling sick is not on slim people’s agenda. Infact, over eating negates the enjoyment of food. No mouthful tastes as good as the first.

So enjoy small quantities of ‘quality’ food and stop wasting your money, your health and your time eating junk that clogs you up. One mince pie filled with lots of juicy raisins and sultanas is much more enjoyable than 6 filled with ‘gloopy’ filler to make them cheaper.

Ban TV Suppers- my Weight Loss thoughts on Waitrose article

I got really annoyed at the article in Waitrose magazine debating whether we should ban the TV supper. One argument that is missed entirely is that when you eat in front of the TV or computer for that matter, you go into an eating ‘trance’. Unless the food is overly hot or tastes ‘off’ you will not even notice what you are eating. You will be unaware of the texture, the smell, the flavour mix and you will eat everything on your plate. The TV hypnotises you with its minute flickers and I have helped more than one mother understand that her children are not deliberately ignoring her when she calls them. They are hypnotised and instead of shouting (which just winds you up) she goes and clicks her fingers in front of them she will break their trance and get their attention.

TV and computer eating is contributing to obesity in this country. You cannot be aware of exactly when you have had enough and know when to stop eating. Just look at the popcorn eaters in the cinema, munching mindlessly away.

How long does it actually take to eat a meal? If you can’t devote this small amount of time to thoroughly enjoy your food without the box then you really do need some help!

Burglars with Good Taste!

I got burgled last week and lost my sense of humour for a while as you can imagine. What did the thief take? Well he/she climbed over a wall to get in and then they went into my shed. Did they take my bike, garden tools, windsurfing boards, my daughters wakeboard? No they emptied my freezer of all my home cooked foods! They left a bag of ice, 3 cup cakes in a tin, ice cream and a bag of chicken breasts. I was very, very mad!
As I advise my weight loss clients to do, I make large meals for the family and use left over’s to freeze portions for later use. So our thief has obviously walked past our house and enjoyed the smells wafting along the pavement and thought they would have some of that.  They must have taken away 2 black sacks of meals in all the freezer containers I have collected over the years.
I haven’t bothered to claim on the house insurance, it’s not worth it with the excess but it’s all the work it was going to save me that’s so annoying. When working late it’s great to take a ‘proper’ meal to work to enjoy and knowing someone else had all my soups, risotto’s, curries, etc is galling!!
Anyhow rant over with, if you plan ahead as I would encourage you to do for those times you are too tired to cook and may then reach for rubbish food, make sure you have a lock on your freezer if it’s outside!!

Treats to Help you Lose Weight

It was a long old week last week and ended feeling very jaded and tired! Yep, even therapists get this way sometimes! So I needed a treat, something to look forward to at the weekend. I’m a great believer in treats and rewards for hard work. What is the point otherwise? So many people treat themselves in unhealthy ways or do not do so at all and then feel very dipondant with life. How so do you reward yourself? With a bottle of wine or a pack of doughnuts? Rewarding yourself with a biscuit with a cup of tea will ensure you put on 5 extra pounds in weight you don’t need over the year.
My top 5 rewards recently have been;
1.       A beautiful bunch of lilies
2.       A new paperback
3.       A sports massage
4.       A morning on the beach with a paper when there were loads of chores to do
5.       A 15 minute water ski
None too expensive and even the water ski only cost about the same as a couple of bottles of decent wine and gave me way more of a thrill and a long lasting buzz. Yes, my legs ache but in a good way.
Think of 5 ways to ‘treat’ yourself now that will help you ‘feel’ better instead of reaching for food or booze. I guarentee you will gain so much more pleasure from these and help you lose the weight too.

A Weighty Memory Problem

Clients tearfully say to me that other people think they are stupid because they are fat. This causes them to work really hard to prove otherwise but if that is the reality they are not going to win. Research at the University of Los Angeles has shown that on average the brains of overweight people were on average 4-8% smaller than those of healthy weight. Premature ageing of the brain results in memory loss and may even contribute to Alzheimer’s.  Scans of the brain showed that the shrinkage occurred around the area of the brain responsible for reasoning, memory retention and ability to make judgements.
The good news was that when they lost weight the memory scores improved. The scientists do not really know why yet but do know the brain starts to function normally again.
Sleep deprivation is a common problem with overweight people. Reported to me time and again is f the marvellous side effects of using hypnotherapy CD’s is much improved sleep which affects concentration hugely in the day.
So thank goodness I am not fat, just coping with the stupidity caused by the menopause is challenging enough!
