Fat is Fat-Period!

When you see the rind on bacon, what is it? When you pour the liquid away from a roast joint of meat, what is it? When a casserole cools with a solid white layer on top, what is it?
It's FAT! And that is what we call it.

Why do we pussy foot around the word 'fat' when it comes to our bodies? The people I see who will actually say “I'm fat” are the ones I can usually help. Why? Because they are not hiding behind the language nonsense of 'cuddly', big-boned' or 'overweight'; they have admitted the truth and want to do something about it.

It may not be PC but get real and if you want to describe your excess layers as 'cuddly' please go buy more 'cuddly' bacon!

PS We can all be described as, and be cuddly-it's nothing to do with weight!

Have Your Cake & Enjoy It

It's been a very weird 24 hours. 3 people from my past have contacted me in the last 24 hours. So bizzare but very lovely.

What has this got to to do with weight loss? Well I have been thinking a great deal about 'mindful eating' recently. especailly over the Chritmas and New Year Period. And during all of the conversations, which hadn't been planned I had been eating. The last person rang me just as I was abotu to drink a cup of tea and eat the last piece of my mothers' delicious Christmas cake. I ate it whilst talking on the phone and was really disappointed afterwards because I realised that actually I hadn't taken time to enjoy and savour all the flavours. And that's it now for 11 months.

The point being, if you are going to eat, do take some time to be mindfully aware, so you can smell, taste and enjoy AND notice when you have eaten enough.

The old saying' a calorie not tasted is a calorie wasted' in my case 'cake'

Eat Mindfully this Christmas

Gentle reminder to really think about what you are eating and drinking this Christmas. Already the January magazines are out filled with the latest diet craze, but what if you just thought about what you are eating thus year. Mindless eating is a complete waste of time and calories.
I ask you, what is the point of having a gloriously rich Christmas Pud or home made mince pie if you don't taste the blessed thing? So allow some space for smelling and tasting instead of stuffing it all in whilst your eyes are glued to the box!

Parties are the worst time when a buffet is spread out but not that difficult to manage really;

1. eat before you go so you will already be full.
2. stay an arms length away from the table
3. only have 2 items on your plate at any one time
4. put your food down to concentrate on the conversation
5. pile up the veggies and be mean with dips
6. for every alcoholic drink, have a glass of water (having said that, it didn't work for me on Saturday night. Oh dear what a headache!)

Have a super super time and enjoy

Lose Weight- Eat Soup

My non professional photo! Reheated for lunch today

The only good thing about this weather is that I loved making soup again yesterday. Not being a terribly enthusiastic cook, making soup satisfies the need to feel that I am providing my family with tasty and nutritious food. Being a good mummy in other words and not feeding my child junk!

Roasted squash soup was delicious and I have enough over to fill my thermos for work in the clinic tomorrow. I have a thermos that you can microwave. Brilliant!

Found the recipe as I often do on www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes and didn't bother with the parsley puree (too much faff!) but did sprinkle chopped parsley and grated parmesan on top.

Have a little go this month as veggie soups do fill you up, are low in calories and really good for your energy levels. Easy to freeze too for emergency lunches at work and home.

Have a souper month

August Top Tips For Young & Healthy

August Top Actions for Staying Young & Healthy

  1. Laugh at least once a day. When was the last time you had a good old belly laugh? Even when I am on my own I listen to funny programmes or read an article that makes me chuckle.
  2. Give out good energy. Practice smiling at everyone you meet, even if you don't feel like it, you will feel better I promise. Remember the old saying “if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours”
  3. Stay fully engaged. This is tough to do and vitally important. When you speak on the phone, do you find yourself doing other 'stuff' too? Unless it's a really annoying call centre (in which case I have other tips!) decide to listen with all your attention. Give that person your emotional presence as you would wish them to do with you.
  4. Plan your food especially for those times when you know eating healthily will be a challenge. Freeze ahead to take the stress out of those times. My colleagues are often commenting how nice my soup or risotto smells as they eat a takeaway sandwich.
  5. Employ an expert. Heres the sales pitch! Pain makes you feel old!! Either find an expert to diagnose, treat and help you prevent re-occurrence or use an expert for preventative measures. My physio's and other therapists often have clients who come regularly to stay supple and mobile or to prepare for events. I see clients who use me as a sounding board to offload stress and find solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems. Call 0118 978 2409

Summer Salad, easy lunch idea

Summer for one week only only and this weekend I have been making the most of the fresh produce in my garden. I only have a really small 'crib' in which I grow salad leaves, rocket, lambs lettuce, parsley, carrots and beetroot, but it's so nice to pick fresh foods and know there's no crap been sprayed on it. In planters scattered around my door, there is more parsley, chives, thyme, basil and rosemary.

For a simple lunch that won't make you tired toast some rye bread (in packets of about 6 not the fresh one), drizzle 'good' oil on it and pile up with avocado, tomato, salad leaves and herbs. Rye bread is high in fiber and low in fat and very tasty.

By the way, I'm no green fingered genius, all the herbs were planted on from supermarket bought ones and the seeds sown in my crib tool all of 20 minutes to do. Give it a go, eating your own food gives a lovely smug feeling!

Feel the Guilt and Do Something About It

“You know what it’s like, you eat a whole chocolate bar and then you feel so guilty about it don’t you?” Well no I don’t, and that’s not me being smug, I do eat whole chocolate bars but I don’t feel guilty. That’s the difference. I do something about it. If I have pigged out I get down the pool and have a longer or harder swim. If my trousers feel a little tight it makes me feel very uncomfortable psychologically as well as physically because that is not who I am. My image of me as a slim person has been in my head since the day I saw myself wearing my mother’s clothes after my second child. Determined to never see that again I did something about it. What image do you have in your head and what do you need to do?

Go ahead and feel guilty but use that guilt to motivate yourself to get active and not put yourself in a prison of self-loathing.  Get angry if necessary, refuse to accept the feelings and decide to exchange them for positive and helpful ones such as respect and love.

Just get out for a walk to clear your head and give you some energy to think straight. Work out why you keep doing things that make you feel guilty. What do you get out of it? And then make a plan to do something about it. What one thing could you do now to make you feel healthier and move you towards being trimmer and feeling good about yourself.

Suffering from Anxiety, Depression or Insomnia?

New Device & Skills to Enhance your Experience

I am always excited when I expand my personal comfort zone by learning new ways to help my clients and this is definitely one of the best and easiest tools I have added but with almighty power.
Confidence is often a big issue with my clients and many suffer from anxiety and depression which contributes to them overeating. Along with my other therapeutic tools I have qualified to be an Alpa-Stim® practitioner. Often used to enhance the trance experience it works by ‘retuning’ the brain waves. I saw this when I had some electrodes attached to me and saw the pattern of brain waves change during my treatment. Featured in many press articles the small device has full FDA approval in the US for anxiety, depression and insomnia.  Check out www.themicrocurrentsite.co.uk for all the science and research.
It is one of the easiest devices to use with simple settings and 2 ear clips. I have used it working, gardening and just walking around tucked in a pocket. The best sleep ever has resulted and I feel really relaxed after the treatment yet alert.

If you suffer from anxiety, depression or insomnia you do not need me to tell you how debilitating it can be.

Call for a free no obligation chat with me to see if this new technology can help you feel better about life.

Start Moving Differently and Lose 500 Calories from Your Fat Stores

Did you see the Horizon programme last week about exercise? If you didn’t I urge to do so before it goes off the iplayer. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01cywtq/Horizon_20112012_The_Truth_About_Exercise/

Dr. James Levine talked about NEAT- Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. If you can increase your NEAT you could burn 500 or more calories a day extra. Simple things that involve no gyms, no sweating and no cost either. Now I’m a big fan of this and have been encouraging clients for years to ‘just do it’ as the slogan goes!
Sitting down all day puts the whole body system into idle mode and when you make an effort to move around at least once per hour you will increase your metabolism and have a positive impact on your physiology.
Keep on the move by walking everywhere you can. Walk up escalators and stairs instead of lifts. Walk to the shops.
Stand up to have a meeting or walk with your colleagues. Set a reminder on your computer every hour to march up and down under desk for 1 minute or better still get up and do so.
Not only will you feel more awake you will be burning excess fat. If you are one of the 80% who take no regular exercise then use simple methods to get moving.

Slim People Enjoy Food Too! Have a mince pie!

Slim People Enjoy Food Too!

Why do fat people think slim people don’t enjoy food? Someone said to me today “well of course I really enjoy eating”. What’s that supposed to mean, that I don’t? Being in the food trade for years developing new products I learnt to appreciate ‘quality’ food. Slim people love eating too but they know when to stop because they ‘listen’ and ‘feel’ their body. Being bloated and feeling sick is not on slim people’s agenda. Infact, over eating negates the enjoyment of food. No mouthful tastes as good as the first.

So enjoy small quantities of ‘quality’ food and stop wasting your money, your health and your time eating junk that clogs you up. One mince pie filled with lots of juicy raisins and sultanas is much more enjoyable than 6 filled with ‘gloopy’ filler to make them cheaper.

Ban TV Suppers- my Weight Loss thoughts on Waitrose article

I got really annoyed at the article in Waitrose magazine debating whether we should ban the TV supper. One argument that is missed entirely is that when you eat in front of the TV or computer for that matter, you go into an eating ‘trance’. Unless the food is overly hot or tastes ‘off’ you will not even notice what you are eating. You will be unaware of the texture, the smell, the flavour mix and you will eat everything on your plate. The TV hypnotises you with its minute flickers and I have helped more than one mother understand that her children are not deliberately ignoring her when she calls them. They are hypnotised and instead of shouting (which just winds you up) she goes and clicks her fingers in front of them she will break their trance and get their attention.

TV and computer eating is contributing to obesity in this country. You cannot be aware of exactly when you have had enough and know when to stop eating. Just look at the popcorn eaters in the cinema, munching mindlessly away.

How long does it actually take to eat a meal? If you can’t devote this small amount of time to thoroughly enjoy your food without the box then you really do need some help!

Burglars with Good Taste!

I got burgled last week and lost my sense of humour for a while as you can imagine. What did the thief take? Well he/she climbed over a wall to get in and then they went into my shed. Did they take my bike, garden tools, windsurfing boards, my daughters wakeboard? No they emptied my freezer of all my home cooked foods! They left a bag of ice, 3 cup cakes in a tin, ice cream and a bag of chicken breasts. I was very, very mad!
As I advise my weight loss clients to do, I make large meals for the family and use left over’s to freeze portions for later use. So our thief has obviously walked past our house and enjoyed the smells wafting along the pavement and thought they would have some of that.  They must have taken away 2 black sacks of meals in all the freezer containers I have collected over the years.
I haven’t bothered to claim on the house insurance, it’s not worth it with the excess but it’s all the work it was going to save me that’s so annoying. When working late it’s great to take a ‘proper’ meal to work to enjoy and knowing someone else had all my soups, risotto’s, curries, etc is galling!!
Anyhow rant over with, if you plan ahead as I would encourage you to do for those times you are too tired to cook and may then reach for rubbish food, make sure you have a lock on your freezer if it’s outside!!

Treats to Help you Lose Weight

It was a long old week last week and ended feeling very jaded and tired! Yep, even therapists get this way sometimes! So I needed a treat, something to look forward to at the weekend. I’m a great believer in treats and rewards for hard work. What is the point otherwise? So many people treat themselves in unhealthy ways or do not do so at all and then feel very dipondant with life. How so do you reward yourself? With a bottle of wine or a pack of doughnuts? Rewarding yourself with a biscuit with a cup of tea will ensure you put on 5 extra pounds in weight you don’t need over the year.
My top 5 rewards recently have been;
1.       A beautiful bunch of lilies
2.       A new paperback
3.       A sports massage
4.       A morning on the beach with a paper when there were loads of chores to do
5.       A 15 minute water ski
None too expensive and even the water ski only cost about the same as a couple of bottles of decent wine and gave me way more of a thrill and a long lasting buzz. Yes, my legs ache but in a good way.
Think of 5 ways to ‘treat’ yourself now that will help you ‘feel’ better instead of reaching for food or booze. I guarentee you will gain so much more pleasure from these and help you lose the weight too.

A Weighty Memory Problem

Clients tearfully say to me that other people think they are stupid because they are fat. This causes them to work really hard to prove otherwise but if that is the reality they are not going to win. Research at the University of Los Angeles has shown that on average the brains of overweight people were on average 4-8% smaller than those of healthy weight. Premature ageing of the brain results in memory loss and may even contribute to Alzheimer’s.  Scans of the brain showed that the shrinkage occurred around the area of the brain responsible for reasoning, memory retention and ability to make judgements.
The good news was that when they lost weight the memory scores improved. The scientists do not really know why yet but do know the brain starts to function normally again.
Sleep deprivation is a common problem with overweight people. Reported to me time and again is f the marvellous side effects of using hypnotherapy CD’s is much improved sleep which affects concentration hugely in the day.
So thank goodness I am not fat, just coping with the stupidity caused by the menopause is challenging enough!
If you have had enough worrying about what others think of you, start today by booking a FREE Chat and finding out what it will really mean to you to have others see the real you.

See Food Diet

We have locusts in our staff room. If we have biscuits or cakes on the staff room table which we frequently do they literally disappear within hours or even minutes sometimes. If you suffer from the inability to waste food as discussed before and need a dustbin then our staff table will oblige!
A study in America put sweets on the desks of the secretaries in either a clear or a white jar with a lid. The jars were the same in every way and each night after the secretaries had gone home the jars were refilled after taking note of how many had been eaten. The secretaries that had clear jars had eaten an astonishingly 77% more calories than those with the clear jar. This would have added 5ilbs in extra weight over the year! How often do you just mindlessly see food (I include biscuits, sweets etc) and just eat it because it’s there. No checking in with your body as to whether it need refuelling or not? Is this random eating of your piling on the pounds or is it making you weary during the day as your body works hard to process the random junk you shove in with no thought?
On the plus side you are less likely to overeat if you are well hydrated. My clients will see that I keep a pint glass in my desk. Not filled with a pint of bitter, I hasten to add, but a pint of water. I always have a 2 litre bottle of water near me and you will be asked if you would like a glass. This is not only to be polite but I find that I can see how likely someone is to be dehydrated by how much they drink or not during our session and whether this needs to be in their hypnotherapy recording. We often mistake the signs of dehydration for hunger so instead of reaching for a biscuit reach for a pint of water.
Top tips:
1. Keep a pint glass on your desk or at your workstation and you will drink much, much more that if you have a small glass. In another study the military found that soldiers drank 81% more water when the water jugs were put on the mess tables as against on a side table. Very important when to be dehydrated could be fatal.  You will be less tired and less likely to reach for a quick sugar ‘fix’.
2. If you have ‘junk’ foods lying around or inside your fridge or a cupboard you frequent, you are having to say ‘no’ mentally so much more often. Each time you see the food you have to make a decision. So put away the ‘junk’, change the cupboard or put to the back of the fridge. The chocolate in my fridge is on the top shelf in the door with a plastic cover over it as it’s where the eggs should be.  I know it’s there but I do not see it every time I open the door.
Back in the office though, my hiding places have been scouted out!! Fireproof locked cupboard perhaps?

Stop Eating in Front of Your Computer to Lose Weight

SeeSaw.com has conducted a survey on eating habits and found that tree-fifths of people are eating their evening meal in front of their computer. I could have saved them the money on this research as it’s all too common and not just for evening meals. The main culprit is lunch, with virtually all my clients who are office based eating lunch whilst on the computer.
To really enjoy your food and be aware of your body’s natural signals to stop eating you must concentrate on your meal. Enjoy the taste, the smell, the textures, the colours! Give some respect to your food and your body by taking time to nourish yourself without distraction.
Take a break from work or the PC and you will come back refreshed. Enjoy a conversation with your family or friends. This will slow your eating and help you to notice when you have had enough and can stop. Remember its all waste, whether you waste it in the waste bin or waste in on your waist.

What Makes You Fearful? Weight Loss Fears

Trekking through the jungle alone didn’t make me fearful, a venomous snake crossing my path made me jump but didn’t make me fearful but eating street food did make me fearful. How weird is that, the thought of getting sick from unhygienic food made me cringe as opposed to getting lost or bitten.
What makes you fearful with regards to your health?
I have heard many different fears expressed by clients regarding food and their personal self image. Despite the abundance of food that we have available to us many still have a deep rooted fear that there won’t be enough at the next meal s so have to eat everything available then and there. Still others have the fear of punishment within them from childhood if they do not clear their plate.
Saddest of all is those who fear unwanted attention by the opposite sex should they become slim. These behaviours stem from previous experience and have become deeply embedded in the unconscious mind. Hypnosis helps to make sense of these fears and free you from them so they stay where they belong, in the past.

Holiday Food and Making Choices

And there it was! The golden arches of McDonalds in Panama!! It never ceases to amaze me where this company has got to despite revolutions and poverty, it is everywhere. Finally back from my Central America travels the only tummy upset was the day I got home when all I had eaten for 24 hours was airline food.

The staple food of Central America is gallo pinto, fried white rice and kidney beans and this is breakfast, lunch and dinner for many.  Being from the affluent west with dollars to spend I was privileged to have choice and ate very, very well most of the time. My gallo pinto was accompanied by meat or fish with a smoothie of fresh fruits to drink.  Eating was a pleasure when food is simple and fresh. In Nicaragua they say that no-one has to go hungry as there is always fruit on the trees. What an amazing attitude from people with so little yet with a welcoming and friendly spirit.

This beautiful little girl was selling mangoes by the roadside instead of being in school.

Travels in third world countries really help you focus on how much we have in this country and be eternally grateful for our ability to choose our destiny.
What are you grateful for today? What choices do you have?

Holiday Eating

My holiday travelling through Central America is nearly here. I set the goal and off I go.  With my interests in food, I will be looking at what the local people eat and sampling new cuisine. There is nothing worse than the sight of a McDonalds when I am abroad and seeing how many tourists will go there because they know what to expect. No sense of adventure or experimentation.
Having said all that my family did draw the line at eating Guinea Pig in Peru, but really couldn’t!
I will inevitable be thinner when I come back because of all the trekking but hope to avoid tummy upsets by taking large doses of probiotics before I go and whilst there. That is not a recommendation it just works for me really well. If I can make my digestive system super strong before I go then I am less likely to suffer.
I’ll let you know what curiosities I find so long as I do not spend too much time bouncing off the walls after sampling all the coffee out there. What caffeine does to your body is another story

Allow Your Body to Rest

Another point on snacking- I have always said you should allow your body to rest and it does not need to be processing food all the time. It’s great to be backed up by medical  research at the  Metabolic Medicine Department at Glasgow University. It was found that snacking puts stress on the liver and the pancreas as blood sugar levels stay higher during the day. Unless you are a diabetic your body is very good at regulation it’s blood sugar levels and eating regular meals with a gap of about 4-5 hours is ideal.
Eating early in the evening and allowing your body to digest before bed will aid sleep. Your body needs to rest and relax, not be processing some enormous great meal.
These are the behaviours of slim people and with Hypnotherapy I will help your unconscious mind to model this behaviour. One of the first significant changes my clients generally see if that they are no longer snacking between meals and are reawakening the feelings of real hunger in their body. How great is that? How do I help you do this? Click here
